2011

* RLC made a submission to the the Social Policy Committee of the Legislative Assembly inquiry into international student accommodation in NSW. In this submission we argued that the introduction of laws to cover people that fall outside of the Residential Tenancy Act 2010 (NSW), while benefiting many residents of NSW, would be of great benefit to international students and would have a significant impact on the housing sector they usually fall within.

*RLC made a submission to the Panel on Indigenous Constitutional Recognition in response to the discussion paper, 'A National Conversation about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Constitutional Recognition'.  The Submission to the expert panel can be found here...

* RLC made a submission to the National Human Rights Action Plan Baseline Study. The overarching recommendation of this submission was that the government reconsider its methodological approach to the baseline study.  The baseline study should outline the full range of Australian's human rights obligations, indicators for meeting those obligations and an assessment of where Australia lies in relation to each of those indicators.

* Redfern Legal Centre made a Submission on the Consumer Credit & Corporations Legislation Amendment (Enhancements) Bill 2011. The Government sought comments on the Bill, which proposes to amend the Credit Laws as they affect a number of areas including hardship provisions, reverse mortgages, consumer leases and small amount credit contracts (or pay day loans).  This submission incorporated our previous submission to Treasury on 7 September 2011 commenting on the proposed Credit Enhancement Bill regarding small amount credit contracts.

* Redfern Legal Centre made a Submission to Treasury on 7 September 2011 commenting on the proposed Credit Enhancements Bill. Treasury sought comments on the Bill, which proposes to amend the credit laws as they affect small amount credit contracts (or payday loans), and which will introduce a national cap of 48% on the amount of fees, charges and interest that can be applied to other consumer credit contracts.

* Redfern Legal Centre submitted a response to the Australian Communications and Media Authority report "Reconnecting the Customer" on 22 July 2011.

*
Redfern Legal Centre's submission to the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy in response to the Telecommunications Ombudsman Scheme Discussion Paper was recently cited in the Sydney Morning Herald article - "Riddle of the crossed telephone lines" , 1 June 2011. Download a copy of our reference submission, please click here.

* In our submission on the review of the Disability Standards for Education
2005
we argue that the standards are not meeting their aims and have not had a significant impact on access to education for students with disability.
The two major reasons for this are a lack of awareness around the standards,
and difficulties in monitoring and enforcing the standards.

* Redfern Legal Centre made a submission on the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy's Discussion Paper on the Reform of the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO).  Telecommunications services and products play an essential role in the lives of many of our clients, and disputes over services or billing can have a severe impact on our clients.

In our submission, we made a number of suggestions for reform of the TIO, to improve the efficiency and efficacy of the TIO, which will increase consumer confidence in the services provided by the TIO.
